Tatkal

Tatkal vs Advance Reservation: What's the Difference?

Missed the advance booking window, or just found out about your trip too late? You've still got a shot — Tatkal exists exactly for this situation. But it works nothing like advance reservation, and mixing up the two is one of the most common booking mistakes.

The core difference

Advance Reservation lets you book up to 60 days ahead of travel, opening at 8:00 AM IST on the day that's exactly 60 days before your journey date. Tatkal, on the other hand, opens just one day before the actual date of travel — a much shorter, much more frantic window.

Why Tatkal exists

Tatkal is designed for last-minute travel — a sudden work trip, a family emergency, or simply forgetting to book in time. It carries a limited quota of seats per train, separate from the regular quota, which is exactly why it sells out within minutes on popular routes.

When to use which

  • Know your travel date more than a day in advance? Use Advance Reservation — it's cheaper and gives you a much wider seat selection.
  • Travelling tomorrow and missed the advance window entirely? Tatkal is your only real option, opening the day before travel.
  • Somewhere in between — a trip a few days out where the advance window has already closed for that date? Tatkal is still the fallback, since it always opens exactly one day before travel, regardless of when the advance window closed.

Good to know: Tatkal timing differs by class — AC classes typically open at 10:00 AM, non-AC at 11:00 AM, the day before travel. Always confirm current timings on the official IRCTC platform, since these details can change.

The bottom line

If you can plan ahead at all, advance reservation is almost always the better choice — lower cost, better seat availability, and a full 60-day head start. Tatkal is a safety net for when planning ahead simply wasn't possible, not a replacement strategy.
